Ghunnah Ikhfa Idgham Iqlab Qalqalah Madd

Ghunnah (Nasal sound)

Pronounce with a nasal hum for ~2 beats. Occurs on noon (ن) or meem (م) with shaddah.

Ikhfa (Hidden)

Hide the noon sound between the tongue and palate. Occurs when noon or tanwin is followed by certain letters.

Idgham (Merging)

Merge the noon or tanwin into the following letter. Occurs with ي ر م ل و ن.

Iqlab (Conversion)

Convert the noon or tanwin into a meem sound. Occurs only before ب (ba).

Qalqalah (Echo/bounce)

Bounce the sound with an echo. Occurs on ق ط ب ج د when they have sukun.

Madd (Elongation)

Stretch the vowel sound for 2, 4, or 6 beats. Indicated by the madd symbol (~) over a letter.

Ayah Marker (circle)

The ornamental circle with a number marks the end of each verse. The number inside is the ayah number in Arabic numerals (١, ٢, ٣...).

Compulsory Pause (Waqf Lazim)

The small "mīm" (ۘ) symbol means you MUST stop. Continuing without pausing changes the meaning.

ط

Absolute Pause (Waqf Mutlaq)

The "ṭā" (ط) symbol means you should stop and take a breath before continuing. Breaking the verse here is recommended.

صلي

Continue Preferred (Wasl Awwalā)

The "ṣād-lām-yā" (صلي) means it is better to continue without stopping. If you do stop, it is permissible.

ج

Permissible Pause (Waqf Ja'iz)

The small "jīm" (ج) means pausing or continuing are both equally acceptable. Either choice is correct.

لا

No Pause (Lā Waqf)

The "lām-alif" (لا) means do NOT stop here. Continuing without pausing is required to preserve the meaning.

قلي

Pause Preferred (Waqf Awwalā)

The "qāf-lām-yā" (قلي) means it is better to stop, but continuing is permissible if needed.

ز

Conditional Pause (Waqf Mu'allaq)

The "zāy" (ز) means pausing is allowed but continuing is preferred. A minor pause option.

س

Silence Pause (Saktah)

The "sīn" (س) means a brief pause without breaking breath, then continue. A moment of silence without taking a breath.

Sajdah Marker (۩)

The "place of sajdah" symbol ۩ appears after verses of prostration. When you reach this sign, perform a sajdah (prostration). Found in Surah Al-Alaq (96:19), Al-Najm (53:62), etc.

Hizb / Quarter Mark (۞)

The ornamental star ۞ on page margins divides the Quran into 60 Hizbs (half-Juz) and 240 quarters, for reading targets.

Madd (Elongation Symbol)

The wavy line (~) above a letter means stretch the vowel sound. Duration depends on the type: 2, 4, or 6 beats.

The ornamental flower shape marks the end of a surah. A new surah begins with a decorative banner and Bismillah on the next page.

Hafs

Hafs from Asim (Current)

The mushaf text on this page is in the Hafs riwayah — the most widely used worldwide. All default reciters use Hafs.

Warsh

Warsh from Nafi

Common in North & West Africa. Select reciters labeled "(Warsh)" to listen in this riwayah. The text differences include spelling variations and different rules for madd and izhar.

Qalun

Qalun from Nafi

Common in Libya, Tunisia, and parts of Egypt. Select reciters labeled "(Qalun)" to listen. Differences from Hafs include basmalah recitation and certain pronunciation rules.

The written text currently follows the Hafs riwayah (Mushaf Madinah standard). Reciters with other riwayat (Warsh, Qalun) will have audio differences from the displayed text. Support for Warsh/Qalun text is coming soon.
